About usWe live on the West Coast of Australia, on 5 acres, an hour south of Perth. We have 3 beautiful Australian Bulldogs: Doza, our male; and our 2 females, Padma (or Paddi) and Ruby Tuesday. All of our AB's are indoor/outdoor dogs, who get plenty of love, attention and exercise. Our dogs are cherished family members, first and foremost. Why Australian Bulldogs?A few years ago, and inspired by a British Bulldog from Melbourne named Gus, we started our research on bulldogs. That's how we discovered the Australian Bulldog, a relatively new breed which we felt was suited to our climate and active lifestyle, but which retained the unique bulldog features and temperament which we had first fallen in love with, thanks to Gus. Whilst we had done our research, and were comfortable that the breed was right for us, we hadn’t actually seen an AB in the flesh. Once we got our boy Doza, however, he was everything we’d hoped for and we were well and truly hooked on the breed. The joy he and our other AB’s have given us has exceeded our expectations and they continue to delight and amaze us. After owning AB’s, we would never consider getting any other breed of dog. Breeding philosophyAs members of the ABS Inc, our aim is to produce quality 3rd and 4th plus generation AB’s. Our goal is to become a reputable breeder of athletic, good-natured and robust dogs. Health and temperament are paramount at West Coast Australian Bulldogs. We would like to be known as a breeder with a direct and honest approach. As part of breeding healthy AB puppies, we pride ourselves on ensuring that our own AB’s are fit and healthy. A good diet and an adequate amount of exercise are paramount to achieving this. DietWhilst you don’t have to feed your dog the most expensive dog food on the market, what you do feed them is crucial to their health and general well-being. Treats are fine but they should be dog-friendly treats not human treats. You may think you’re being kind to your dog by giving them things like leftovers and chocolates, but you may find that your dog ends up with skin and weight problems as a result. ExerciseGetting any pet is a big commitment. Whilst AB’s are low maintenance in terms of the amount of exercise they require compared to other breeds, they are definitely very social dogs and need a reasonable amount of human affection and attention. Having said that, what dog doesn’t? If you work full-time and will be spending most of the week away from home, your AB will need lots of attention when you get home. A quick walk (only 15 – 20mins should be enough, depending on the temperature) before you go to work and again when you get home from work will be hugely beneficial for your AB. Dog training is really good stimulation for any dog, and something we highly recommend to all of our prospective buyers. AB’s are highly intelligent, unlike their slow and often clumsy ways may otherwise suggest. Their aim to please often makes them good pupils, although bulldog’s are known to have a stubborn streak which can become more apparent during training. One of the most important things our dog trainer told us is that dog training classes are about training the owner’s, not the dogs. This is so true. GeneralAB’s are renowned chewers so, if left to their own devices for long periods of time, you may find that they will get up to a bit a mischief. Again, not uncommon for any dog, if it’s not stimulated enough. Do you have a reasonable sized backyard? A dog needs ample room to play and lots of “toys” to keep it amused. Anything you don’t want chewed, should be moved out of harm’s way! AB’s are people-dogs and shouldn’t be just constantly left on their own or ignored. They really are one of man’s best friends, and they will give back more than double the love you give them – they love to please you and hate to disappoint you.
